As a lifelong disability advocate, my journey began with my brother, who was born with profound autism. His experiences in state institutions have fueled my passion for advocating for the rights and dignity of individuals with disabilities. I have served as an elected official and a federal disability official. I'm worried about where America is headed in the 21st Century. I think Americans still care about people, but I'm not sure about today's elected officials.As a committed advocate for individuals with disabilities, my journey began with my brother, who has profound autism. His experiences in state institutions fueled my passion for championing their rights and dignity. Additionally, I started my career as an American Government teacher, where I taught high school seniors that our government leaders are accessible and genuinely care about their constituents. However, the older I get, the less certain I feel that this is still true.
